SEL - First Quarter
Social Emotional Learning gives us a time to check in with our students and work on making sure we are helping develop the whole student who is life ready.
I will post information here as we go through the year to keep you updated. We have started off the year talking about what the students liked and disliked about SEL in 7th grade. What does SEL 8th grade look like? Taking ownership is an important aspect of SEL success. Many students wrote “team work,” “community service,” and “making sure they are ready for High School” at the top of their list!
With that being said, I have started with SELF CONFIDENCE. These are the questions that the students have pondered: What does that mean? How do I develop mine? What components make up my self confidence? They are starting to conclude that being self confident will help them make good choices when it is difficult.
How are we building self confidence you might wonder?
It is my goal for our students to leave St. Timothy’s confident, ready for high school and knowing that they should use their minds to think through all situations they face.

How are we building self confidence you might wonder?
- We are engaging in public speaking - feeling confident in their own skin whether planned or impromptu
- We have played games of self awareness
- Students from each class have come up with fun activities that have a life lesson in them
- We watched a self confident video that was a Ted Talk https://youtu.be/w-HYZv6HzAs

Kids walk in to SEL and surprise we are going to learn a line dance! WHY? How is this related to social emotional learning? It is fun, active and leads up to the dance etiquette conversation before their first dance of the year where they are the older students on campus. It was risky yes, but a great success for the most part!
We spend a class reading with 1st grade students! Great experience for young and old.
We spend another class making ribbons for Friends and their Freddies store!
